Aim To provide strong background knowledge for teaching geometry in Senior High school.
Description The current geometry curriculum in Dutch Senior High School (the so called B- and D-math) includes synthetic Euclidean geometry, conic sections, so-called conflic-lines and in the near future analytical geometry as well. There are also possibilities for optional subjects like fractals, fourth dimensional space, use of complex numbers.
This course focuses on geometries (plural!) which can shed more light on those subjects from different and more general and advanced mathematical viewpoints. Some projective geometry will be present, some topology, hyperbolic geometry, where interrelations between different approaches will be stressed and divers analytical and non-analytical methods will be combined. Explicit links with high school subjects will be provided constantly, but the theory studied will also be worth to stand on his own.
Organization

The first meetings of the course will be presented by the instructors themselves. During the contact hours there will be time to work on problems and discuss them. Students will be invited solve and invent problems as homework, to study special subjects by themselves and present about them; of course in cooperation with the instructors.

Examination On activities by the students during and after the course, in presentations and papers.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of and experience with synthetic Euclidean geometry on pre-university level, basics of group theory, topology, calculus on bachelor level.
